I think you've got two options. The first is set enable_star to true *and* min_infix_len or min_prefix_len to 1, and then add :star => true to your search queries (so it'll be translated to *Branding* *Miss* *G*).
The second is change/set the charset_table setting. The default includes underscores as word characters: charset_table = 0..9, A..Z->a..z, _, a..z, U+410..U+42F->U+430..U+44F, U+430..U+44F, U+401->U+451, U+451 (taken from http://sphinxsearch.com/docs/current.html#conf-charset-table) So, you can add this to config/thinking_sphinx.yml (repeated for each environment) - note that I've just taken the default list, and removed the underscore character: development: charset_table: 0..9, A..Z->a..z, a..z, U+410..U+42F->U+430..U+44F, U+430..U+44F, U+401->U+451, U+451 Then run `rake ts:rebuild` to ensure the settings have taken affect. This will mean underscores are now ignored when Sphinx finds all the words in your data, so 'Branding Miss G_' will be indexed as 'Branding Miss G'.
