It's not possible to use any other match mode with SphixnQL - and that's the only protocol TS v3 works with.
However, extended match mode allows for the same logic as pretty much every other match mode. Indeed, you don't need to change anything for queries expecting the 'all' match_mode. If you want the behaviour of 'any', you'll need to split the query up and include an | between each word ( | - that's the pipe character, not a lowercase L or uppercase i - is Sphinx's logical OR).
