Hi Evan, I am getting the same error and I searched all over for last 10 days and simply cant get it to work. I am just using and EC2 instance with RDS.
I connect to RDS via EC2 security group on port 3306 to Index. I was able to Index it once and the search is working with the index that was created few weeks again.
