Thanks Pat. Yes UTF8 is good. I only changed the collation to get the record saving at all.
Right. First problem solved, my muppetry. The delta is working fine. I was saving a related record, so delta indexing was never going to be relevant. This is fine. Sorry. I don't have any character/encoding related settings in `config/thinking_sphinx.yml`. I have upgraded to 2.2.11 but still have the problem with the excerpts.
