Your T41 has all the symptoms of a GPU failure that these machines are
infamous for...see more here

Apart from replacing the motherboard, one can also re-flow the solder in the
GPU area with a heat gun, or send it to one of the places that offer this type
of service.

Good luck.

Cheers,

George

Subject: [Thinkpad] T41 video

I've got a T41 whose video is screwed up, showing same symptoms on the LCD and
external display.

When cold or warm boot, it would need several restarts to get the screen
readable, instead of various noise/dot patterns. Once the video got
initialized correctly at boot, it was useable. Sometimes it would be nearly
perfect, but usually it would have artefacts, like a box around the cursor, and
red vertical streaks on video.

But finally, no amount of booting would get to a useable state. So I got a
W500. :)

Is this the video controller or bad shared memory, or other?

If the video controller, there's no way to fix except replacing the motherboard?

Anybody got a used, working T23 mobo? Bruce?

Thanks
Len
