In my opinion and experience many ThinkPads from the era of the T60 have
defective batteries. I have a T60 that was 13 months old when it went
from a 'like new' battery to a totally failed and non-functional battery
instantly one day. It wouldn't charge and it wasn't recognized beyond
the message "your battery has failed". In researching things I found
Lenovo had two battery recall programs for T and X series systems from
the same general model range as mine but my battery's FRU was not
included on either recall. I also found that the battery failure
scenario (total immediate failure, not gradual degradation) was
commonplace on these systems. To me, it is obvious that there was a bad
batch of batteries. Lenovo seemed to be trying to do the right thing by
having recalls but they fell short of my expectations by refusing to
acknowledge that their recall should apply to more FRUs. The symptoms
were identical. The models were from the same production range.

You can read more about things here:

The one bright spot is that there are some good battery deals on the
Lenovo outlet web site. I picked up a replacement 9-cell battery for
the T60 for under $40. This sale has been noted on the TP list several
times, even as recently as the last week or two.
