I like to upgrade the HD on my Thinkpad every two or three
years, "before" the HD conks out.

I have the optical disks (a CD and a DVD) to restore the
factory configuration on my X32

A couple+ of years ago, I used those disks, plus a bootable
linux and gparted (?) to move from 40 GB to 80 GB. I was
pleased with the result, though it did mean reinstalling
a lot of apps on the new HD. Yes, I have an external USB2 /
Firewire DVD drive, and an external USB HD case. OS is
XP, SP3.

The 160 GB drive just arrived in the mail and I'm wondering if
there are any 2009 hints before I embark on this journey.
For example, I'm wondering if I'll have to do anything special
to make a 160 GB drive work on an X32.

An alternative method, if it works, would be to boot a linux
and use it to copy the internal 80 GB to the external 160 GB
thus avoiding the travails of a system restore. But I don't
know if it will work, and I forget the exact steps you have to
go through to make the new drive bootable.

TIA !
