Your board is relatively safe for flash memory devices, used briefly. The
problem arises when USB devices use the computer for their operating
power... cameras, external drives of various types, audio relays...
acquire
their power for operation through USB ports - which are considered normal
uses of USB ports.
However, all that will generally happen is that trying to run such a device
will trigger a USB error, and the device will not run. I do not believe
that you will damage the laptop. USB devices are not vampires that can suck
the vital essence out of the machine through the USB port, any more than
using a high-wattage power brick can push the extra watts into a laptop and
fry it. These are both common warnings in the laptop world, but electricity
does not work that way.
