You can get a port replicator for the X31 for just a few dollars on eBay.
If the problem goes away with the replicator (or a docking station) then the
problem is your power jack, which unfortunately is soldered onto the
motherboard on this model.
If it randomly shuts off with a good charged battery inside, then you have
other problems.

Subject: [Thinkpad] X31 - Power/charging problems, intermittent shut off...
Hello there from CA,
My trusty X31 started suffering from a "non-charging" symptom, that seemed
to have nothing to do with the "looseness" of the AC plug on the machine
(it
was tight). Sometimes it would receive a charge, sometimes it wouldn't.
Then, the machine started randomly shutting off as if someone removed the
battery from it. Eventually, the machine wouldn't power on at all.
I'm not sure what piece of hardware on the motherboard would affect the
electrical current in this way, and I know these machines aren't worth
much...but I would love to fix it if it's not that expensive as I LOVE
this
machine!!! Please help if you have any advice. Thanks in advance!
