I have a "www.vantecusa.com" "SATA / IDE to USB 2.0 adapter" that works quite well with either interface. As I recall it cost about $35. It interfaces with SATA, and 3.5", 5.25" and 2.5" IDE drives.

Subject: [Thinkpad] T42 broken, logic board needs to be replaced
Hi all,

My T42 is broken. The logic board is not working any more and needs to be

replaced. They wanted $500 (!) to fix it... This is way too much than I want

to spend, since I have had this computer for six years.

Is there a cheaper alternative to fix it? Also, let's say I don't fix it, so

the logic board stays the same broken logic board. Is there a way to salvage

certain files on the hard drive?

Thanks.

Hi Jerry,

If you just want to get the data off the drive, remove it from the computer and
then connect it to a functional one using an SATA/IDE to USB adapter or an
external drive dock. You can get either one from typical online retailers or a
well-stocked computer store.
