Hello,
I would suggest that before you make any changes to the system that you
make one (or, ideally, more) complete backups of your ThinkPad running
Microsoft Windows XP and verify the backups are complete by restoring
them, preferably to a different computer.
Once you have done that, you can begin experimenting with registry
cleaning tools.
I have heard numerous reports of efficacy for them, ranging from
modest performance gains to them leaving the computer in an inoperable
state. Obviously, your results will vary, hence the recommendation to
make backups and verify them.
If your heart is set on running a registry cleaner, I would suggest
trying the following programs and see what effect, if any, they have
on your computing environment:
o Lars T. Hederer's NTREGOPT
o Macecraft Software's jv16 PowerTools
o Piriform CCleaner
My day job is at a company which develops security software (think
anti-virus, firewalls, etc.) and sometimes programs like these leave
programs like ours in a non-working state as they removed a registry
entry or a directory we were using. Your experiences may vary, but
again, I would like to emphasize making a backup before the use of
such programs.
Regards,
Aryeh Goretsky

Registry cleaner appropriate for T-pad w XPpro?
I have not run a registry cleaner previously, after some years of
installs/uninstalls etc. I do not have any notable issues but
consider that there is some amount of cruft which should be removed.
1. Should I run a registry cleaner at all?
2. If so, which one is non-destructive and unlikely to introduce
issues after it does its fixing?
