Although I miss the 4:3 form factor, I have grudgingly accepted that
this size has been retired by manufacturers who favor the widescreen
form. My all-time favorite thinkpad has been the 600 and I have owned
almost every variety starting from the basic 600 to the final 600X.

Nevertheless, I think a worthy successor is my latest acquisition, an
X301. It's light and while not a speed demon in the CPU department, I
consider it adequately powered(Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400 / 1.4 GHz) for
my needs. Moreover, the brightness of an LED backlight LCD compared to
the CCFL LCDs brings to me back to 701 vs. 701CS days. Although the
retail price is pretty high, it can be occasionally had in the Lenovo
outlet store for reasonable money. Typing on the X301 (IMHO) is up to
the high Thinkpad standards, especially after that infernal ultranav
touchpad is turned off.
