No it is not a regular thing and you need not be concerned that the 600 series is prone to battery-related explosions. Considering the number of 600s that were sold, and that are still in circulation, the number of reported incidents is quite small. I can only think of 1 or 2 that made it to the blogosphere, and that includes the one you've just pointed to. However, it is difficult to vouch for any particular after-market battery maker.
