Hi

After spending all day trying to get an OS installed on my 240X without a CD
drive I have finally managed to get Windows 2000 on it.

I tried getting XP Home on it. I popped out the hard drive, stuck it in a
different laptop, partitioned it into two, installed MS DOS on the first one
and copied the i386 folder from my XP CD into the second. Once back in my
ThinkPad I booted into DOS and ran winnt from the i386 folder.

Under XP it stalled about 20 mins into the installer. Tried it a few times,
same each time. Replace the XP i386 folder with the one from my 2000 CD and it
worked. Copying was initially slow, I presume it was hard work copying from one
place on the hard drive to another place, but it did it and installed no
problems.

I am writing this email from it. Only a couple of driver issues with video and
sound, but I downloaded these from IBM and everything is now fine.

So suggestions as to why XP didn't work? Am I missing something? Does XP not
work on these machines or does it have to have the latest BIOS version?

I always thought 2000 and XP were in the same boat. I would really like to get
XP on this beauty.

And for the record 2000 on a P3 500Mhz with 192MB RAM screams along,
blisteringly fast. It didnt fair too well on my P2 300Mhz with 196MB RAM TP600.

Loving this small machine, keyboard isnt too small, some of the keys will take
a little while to get used to their location and battery lasts about 3 hours.
Fantastic.
