If the original installation was 32-bit, then according to this, the
original product key would not validate a 64-bit installation. I
would be interested in learning of your experience.
As I said, it's working fine for me (at least so far). But I didn't
enter the product key at all when installing the 64-bit version. As per
instructions, I left it blank and I used ABR to restore activation from
the previous 32-bit install.
