For two recent Windows 7 64-bit installs, I was told that the image contained both 32- and 64-bit versions and that the product key

Maybe these were retail versions of Windows 7? My understanding is that
with OEM versions (factory preinstalled) the same product key will work
with both the 32-bit and the 64-version version (as long as the edition
remains the same).

If the original installation was 32-bit, then according to this, the
original product key would not validate a 64-bit installation. I
would be interested in learning of your experience.

As I said, it's working fine for me (at least so far). But I didn't enter the product key at all when installing the 64-bit version. As per instructions, I left it blank and I used ABR to restore activation from the previous 32-bit install.
