Alex Thanks I thought that was the case. I wasn't aware that not connecting an antenna would cause power problems. The card is working fine it just has poor signal quality - due to the lack of antenna.
I might do what you suggested regarding an external antenna. The Mini PCI card is hidden under a hatch, which I could drill a small hole in an run an antenna through. It could be attached to a small metal disc on the outside Mini PCI hatch. I do not really need a great signal at present - as it is it has ample signal strength but a better strength would be nice.
