My girlfriend's SL500 left hinge broke this evening rather suddenly.
I have done some googling and this is a common issue.
The machine is about 20 months old so I suspect Lenovo will be no
help. Has
anybody else dealt with this and have any insights into the repair?

Ive tried to find a proper photo on the net of what actually breaks, but
all one finds is an outside picture.
Now I repair laptops, and see lots of broken plastic bits on them,
where they have been mis handled, but in most cases its bad design and
cheap impementation thats the real cause.
In fact ive never actually seen a broken hinge, its always where the
hinge connects to plastic parts of the base or the tft screen framing
that fails.
On proper thinkpads from IBM days, not Lenovo ones the construction
apart fron a couple of models has always been exemplary, with hinge
parts in metal ,extending well into the body and up into the screen to
spread the deliberate stiffness needed to keep the screen from flopping
about.
Regrettably I havnt had a SL500 in for repair so cant advise what fix
might be possible.
If your in the UK and down south, id be appy to have a look for you, but
youd have to get it to me here Nr. Swanage.
