You didn't mention what OS you're using, but under XP I've been enjoying 
"Folder Size," which adds a Folder Size column (and others) to explorer 
windows, telling you immediately the size of folders *including their 
subfolders* (i.e. the way the Mac OS finder did all along).  This has proven 
immensely helpful in file system maintenance.  It would work well for the task 
you've described.

It doesn't work in Vista or 7.  Only Windows 2000 and XP.
