I'm sad to say that you're most likely looking at an early stage of the
SouthBridge chip failure (detachment) which is a very common problem on these
machines.

At some point you'll get the permanent "0200" message even when there's no hard
drive installed and that will be the end of the game. You may or may not notice
the USB ports, keyboard, wired and wireless LAN as well as the sound chip
developing a mind of their own in the meantime.

Re-balling (not reflowing) the solder balls under the chip or motherboard
replacement are the only long-term solutions.

Good luck.

Cheers,

George

Subject: [Thinkpad] T43 mystery glitch

Ideas please: several days ago upon booting I
received error msg "Hard disk failure". I reseated
the drive several times but still received the
same message on each boot. Although all my
data were backed up, I was not looking forward
to creating a new drive.

The next day and since the T43 has booted
normally.

Are there other conditions which might
generate this message? Anything to do now?
The tray utility says no shock detected.
