I think the free MS Word Viewer includes text conversation filters that
allow Wordpad to open newer .doc files as well. Windows XP, I think,
includes filters for office XP (2002). Word 97 uses the latest .doc format,
so Wordpad in XP should be able to open anything. The word viewer should
allow Wordpad to open .docx files, though.
