The ThinkPad Blu-ray Burner Ultrabay Slim 9.5mm Drive (SATA) (43N3215)
was discontinued in October 2009. Recommended replacement is the
"Drive II" (43N3230) which appears to be $1200 (!) from Lenovo.

The original 43N3215 is as "cheap" as $400 on Amazon Marketplace
though that's still a lot. Were there known problems with it, or was
it just withdrawn to support more formats/higher speeds/etc.?

A USB-powered Blu-Ray burner from Digistor is $200 on Amazon, don't
know if it's good or a good price but ironically my two old external
DVD burners were Digistor (and not USB powered).

I think a BD burner would be good for backups at 25GB instead of DVDs
at 8.5GB (DL). I'd prefer an internal (to the Ultrabase) drive but not
for $1200.

Any thoughts or insights?

Thanks!
