[Thinkpad] Is it normal for screen to temporarily go black when plugging/unplugging power?

Hi all, I have a new Win7 64bit Thinkpad. When I unplug or plug in the
power it: beeps, then adjusts brightness, then goes totally black,
then returns -- is that normal? Is there some way to eliminate that
black bit?
