What was needed was to copy the visible (in Ubuntu) driver to the hard drive, then boot into XP and the install. For some reason the X32 would not see the driver on the USB stick (or the cd-ROM) but had no trouble with it once it was on the hard drive, go figure. Once I had the ethernet working I went to Lenovo, ran Thinkvatage 3.14 and I was good (actually it was a lot more complex, needed Net 2.0, needed lots of windows updates needed to update Explorer, etc, all told took about 90 minutes to get it running as it should, but it is.)
