Fan costs are an old story.  I remember complaining to DEC about the sleeve 
bearing fans in the VAX and why they didn't use ball bearing fans (which I 
actually bought and installed to avoid all the fan failure downtime).  It came 
down to dollars spent (ball bearing fans cost half again as much) and would 
they last through the warranty period.  Today's throw away economy makes it 
even worse.
