You might have to configure or re-configure Access Connections. I'm typing this 
on a T43p which has the same wireless card as your T42, a very old version of 
AC and is connected to my router with WPA2 - PSK encryption.

Some trial and error is likely to be required in the process.

 My roommate has a T42, type 2373-JTU. Our WiFi access point is running 
 WPA2-PSK. Windows XP SP3 is not able to connect to the network, but when I 
 boot into a Linux Live CD, WiFi works just fine. Drivers in Windows are 
 completely up-to-date.
