ISTR a while ago that there was a driver that let you drag files to a CD or DVD 
in the writer, and folks thought it was buggy. But I don't see anything in the 
installed programs list that looks like this. Can anyone tell me where to go? 
(Yes, that was a slow pitch, right across the plate.)

Sadly, you need to rebuild from scratch.  I once had a user who had a bad
thinkpad in terms of XP stability, and spend something like 60 hours trying
stuff, before I found some registry problems, and fixed them--mostly.

That taught me that once things got wonky, rebuilding was faster than
trying to deal with the root cause.  Given that Windows is closed source,
it's just about the only option.
