OK that's interesting. I never knew that existed or what it's for. But for some reason it can solve the problem if using the Chrome print mechanism which offers page preview.
But I cannot use Chrome print because for any file larger than a few sheets it crashes the T43 by immediately consuming 2 gb of memory. So I have to use Ctrl-Shift-P which mutilates the print stream as noted in my original message by horizontally shrinking the page by 1/3. This is a property of Chrome Another excellent idea perhaps?
