To lock the computer into the base. If you buy the base without a key in
the unlocked state then you should be able to latch and unlatch the computer
as if it was a base without a lock. I don't know what happens if you
unknowingly have the base in locked state and try to put your computer into
it.

Probably not. I believe the keys are individual even within model.
