My wife's new T530 just arrived an hour ago; it seems very nice so far.
Chrome was preinstalled, which is interesting. I told it twice during installation not to activate Norton and it did it anyway.grr. I ordered her the backlit keyboard. The backlighting is controlled via <Fn><space> -- the "Magnify" function is gone (unlamented, at least by me). There are four settings: off, backlit low, backlit high, and ThinkLight; hitting <Fn><space> sequentially cycles through these. The backlit keyboard has the keys inset in a plastic grid, rather than being free-floating as my T420s is. This is good for my wife's use, as she often sits in bed with the machine on her lap, which means her keyboards get particularly grimy with bits of hair and skin (I sit back from mine at my desk, so there's less stuff dropping on the keyboard, except when I forget to wash my hands J) - I think less crap will wind up under the keys. Mind you, when it does, I'll definitely have to take it apart, as opposed to shutting it down, turning it over, and shaking it. The feel is quite different: not as much travel. But it's quieter and she likes it. Not sure I would, will report more after I've used it some more in setting her up. The Trackpoint nipple isn't raised above the keyboard, which may take some getting used to. Biggest change is the actual keyboard layout. PgUp and PgDn are at the bottom right, by the cursor movement keys. There's no second row of keys at the top right with PgUp/PgDn/Home/End/Delete (and Insert, on older models). ScrLk and Pause are completely gone, as is the context menu Windows key (the regular Windows key is still there). Where the context menu (aka "right-click") key was is where PrtSc is now. There's no NumLk at all that I can see. Screen brightness is <Fn><F8> and <Fn><F9>; <Fn><F10> looks to be "back one track", as <Fn><cursor left> is on my T420s; <Fn><F11> is Play/Pause and <Fn><F12> is "forward one track" (again, modeling what was on the <Fn><cursor> keys on my T420s). There are no "back a page" and "forward a page" keys like my T420s at the bottom right with the cursor keys, since those two keys are now PgUp and PgDn. Interesting choices, given that they have a LOT of real estate to work with, at least on the 15" models. Speakers sound better than T500, and are noticeably louder at full volume. REMOVED SINCE IT WOULDN'T POST: <I'm attaching two pictures of the keyboard; not sure whether they'll come through.> Anyone who wants 'em just email me and I'll send 'em direct. Will post more if/when I notice more! .phsiii _______________________________________________ Thinkpad mailing list [email protected] http://stderr.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/thinkpad
