Chad, that would probably work, but negative field ids are pretty bad from a
standpoint of safety and compatibility, so I don't think we should expend
implementation time or CPU time supporting them. I'm fine with making them
very inefficient. If it makes it easier to implement the compact protocol
faster in more languages, I'd also be fine with throwing an exception on
negative field ids. No segfaults, though.
