Description:
On certain kernels, waiting with a very long timeout (e.g. many minutes or
hours) returns just before the expected time, hitting the assert and abruptly
bringing down the whole process.
I don't have enough information about affected platforms to style an ifdef --
feel free to buttress the attached patch if you'd prefer it to be more specific.
Also attached for your consideration is a patch to compile thrift lib with
-DNDEBUG.
