+1. Clean download followed by configure + make yielded no issues for me.

+1.  I reproduced the build procedure and got a tarball with no nontrivial
differences.  In the long term, I'd like to migrate to "make dist", but there's
no rush.  Also, there are some empty directories in there that I never noticed
because git ignores them.  Might be nice to rmdir them.
