David, you're right this is an svn checkout. Revision 1000647 -- as of a few 
hours ago.

I'll try with 0.4 and report again, in the meantime, I'm not sure why 
AC_PROG_LEX and AC_PROG_YACC haven't properly caught the lack of flex/bison. 
It'd be worthwhile to test for pkg-config too.
