I waited a couple of days before responding to see if it would crop up, but so far since upgrading to the latest thuanr and gtk+ I no longer have the permissions issue nor the horizonital scroll bar issue.  I'll report back if it appears again but this is the longest I've gone without seeing it so I think it's a dead issue.  I'm glad I didn't waste anyone's time reporting this as a bug.  Thanks
