Couple of possible things to check - Please be sure that in your the settings for your Hotmail account in Thunderbird that the "Use secure connection" setting is set to "Never".
It would also be advisable to increase the Thunderbird timeout setting (Tools > Options > Advanced > Connection) to a higher value - I have mine set to 300 seconds.
