It should still get mail when you click the "Get Mail" button in Thunderbird whether or not those boxes are ticked, ticking then just tells TB to automatically check for new mail and download it. I see that you aren't using the default port number, does the port number in the webmail extensions options match this? Most likely you have already checked this, but like Sherlock Holmes, we have to eliminate all other possibilities to arrive at the truth however improbable.
