The settings must be done in Thunderbird - Tools - Account Settings - Locate your hotmail acount and configure your changes in the server settings. I only changed the POP not the SMTP as my ISP differed. The changes in account to the pop3.live.com and SSL ad 995 were all I did and all my email downloaded.
