I've been having the same problem and just set up to receive my hotmail via the POP access. Simply delete your hotmail webmail addon in TBird. Open your hotmail account in account settings in Thunderbird. Go to server settings > In the Server Name field add : pop3.live.com > change the port to 995 > change secure connections to : SSL and it should work fine as long as you are using the new version of Windows Live - Hotmail.
