Before you go down the path of the add-on for GMail ... let me remind
you that GMail/GoogleMail provides free POP, SMTP and IMAP servers and
you can find plenty of references to the setup for these servers in
the main Thunderbird forum.  If this meets your needs (or if you need
further help with those settings) let us know.

The only real need for the GMail add-on for Thunderbird is for users
who are trying to access GMail in an environment that blocks the ports
needed to access the free servers of GMail.  If so you can download
the necessary add-ons from http://webmail.mozdev.org/installation.html
