at long last I confess to having been taken in by a phishing email ...
I should have known so much better.  Thanks for your helpful reply ...
you are quite right.

I have just spent the day changing the passwords on the many email
accounts I maintain ...almost all are for testing only but I do not
want to allow these *unpleasant people* (substitute the foulest
alternative that comes to your mind) to make good on their theft.
