Are you using Linux or Mac operating system? I've heard this before, 
Linux based operating systems unzip the file and the contained *xpi 
file. This is because the *.xpi file is a zip file. I'm not sure of the 
details, but unzipping from a command line interface instead of clicking 
on the file is supposed to work.
