I know, but that didn't work at all for the account in question and gave
exactly the same error message except (maybe) a different error number.

At this point I've pretty much given up on the second account. Even hotmail,
cheap b*st*rds though they are (they originally sold their subscriber list to
the spammers -- I know because the mailbox filled up with spam even though I
NEVER used the address for anything) allows free POP access now.

I just tested again. Mail to first yahoo account (new) came through
immediately. Mail to second (classic) account arrived in my gmail account 20
minutes later. Switched second account to 'new' and it arrived in my gmail
account 25 minutes later -- just like with the 'classic' account.

It's still mystifying, but I'm tired of thinking about it :-( As long as the
first account works and the second one sort of works, I'm happy.
