I can't help with the missing attachments, but you can increase the time 
out setting in Thunderbird. "Tools", "Options", then select the 
"Advanced" section in this dialogue. Under "Network & Disc Space", 
"Connection", you can enter any figure you want for the time-out, mine 
is currently 600 seconds.
