Angelina, What your asking for is already built-in to Thunderbird.
1. Run Thunderbird 2. Select the Edit menu, Account Settings..., select Server Settings and the rest is self-explanatory. Depending on your operating system and Desktop Environment, there are notification programs available. What I do is leave TB running and minimize it.
