You could set your Google mail account up as an IMAP account in
Thunderbird. Just follow the "New Account" dialogue in Thunderbird
chosing IMAP as the account type and entering your Googlemail username
and password where required. The first time this new account checks for
mail, it will download a list of folders from Googlemail and headers for
all the stored mails. Selecting a mail from any folder will then
download the mail for reading. After setting up an IMAP Google account
in TB any message, old or new will be available both on the Googlemail
web site or in Thunderbird.
