Gmail has free POP capability built in, but you need to activate this on 
your Gmail web pages. If you can't use, or don't want to use Gmail's POP 
servers you can install the basic web mail extension and the Gmail 
extension and use those instead. If you're using the extensions and have 
correctly set up the account in Thunderbird, it doesn't matter whether 
or not you've enabled POP on the Gmail web site.
