Good question, Phil!

You arbitrarily selected those ports without any idea what might be
using them. Now what happens when you try to use the application or
service that expects those ports to be reserved for its use? If the
app or service fails, how long might it take to discover there's an
issue with the port being shared? And what makes the troubleshooting
issue worse, the problem could seem to occur intermittently, since TB
would only be using the ports when receiving or sending email.

Does that help to understand why I posted the list of reserved ports?
I always refer to it before assigning ports to an app. If the port's
reserved usage is for an application or service you'll never install
or run, then you're probably safe using that port. When other apps
and services query that port to see if a particular app or service is
on the system and running, what's the impact on the applcation or
service you have running there? I don't have all the answers, I just
try to be cautious and more informed before arbitrarily setting up
programs/services to use ports.
