You need right click the links and "Save as". You can then open the saved file in Thunderbird's install Add on dialogue to install the extensions. Because both Thunderbird and Firefox use the same XPI file type for add ons, Firefox assumes that a left click on a link to an XPI file is something for it to install itself. Only once it has opened the file does it find the error.
