just one other thought ...

the reason that this problem has only come to light from your research
is perhaps partly due to the fact the if the attachment is extracted
from Thunderbird then, even with the issue existing, the resulting
file is (in the cases I have checked) indistinguishable from the
original sent file.

I would certainly agree that the received message source should
correspond with the sent message source and for you and me that is nor
the case with Yahoo attachments.  However I suspect that not too many
can be following the path of sending the attachment via .eml and
experiencing the problems it causes you and I am impressed by your
research in tracking this down.
