Using Ariva AntiVir Personal here without problems..

Thunderbird needs to be set to allow antivirus programs to quarantine
individual messages. Set Ariva guard to scan all files. Once a virus
containing message is quarantined Thunderbird needs to compact the mailbox
in questioned to actually get rid of the message; otherwise, scans
afterwards will keep showing the virus message even thou the message no
longer appears in your mailbox.
